Paris Saint-Germain look set to win the race to sign Sergio Ramos on a free transfer, following the expiry of his contract at Real Madrid on Wednesday after 16 years in the Spanish capital.
PSG are now said to be close to reaching an agreement with the 35-year-old having seen off reported competition from the likes of Manchester City and Bayern Munich.
According to ESPN, Ramos and the Ligue 1 side are in ‘advanced negotiations’, with talks progressing throughout this week and a final decision imminent.
There could be a sticking point, however. The Spain international – who was left out of his nation’s Euro 2020 squad after an injury-hit 2020/21 campaign – wants the comfort of a two-year deal, but PSG are only prepared to offer him a one-year contract with the option for a further 12 months, while his wages are also expected to be lower in the French capital.
Length of contract was one of the reasons Ramos’ time in Madrid came to an end, with the veteran centre-back evidently keen to secure his future until he is likely to hang up his boots.
ESPN write that Ramos was drawn to the ‘ambitious’ project presented to him by PSG‘s sporting director Leonardo, with the dethroned French champions likely going all out to reclaim their Ligue 1 crown and finally go all the way in the Champions League.
He is also thought to believe that he would adapt faster to life in Paris, with former Real Madrid teammates Keylor Navas and Angel Di Maria currently plying their trade there.
Centre-back was not initially a priority area for strengthening for PSG, but having allowed the evidently very able 36-year-old Thiago Silva leave a year ago only for him to go on to win the Champions League with Chelsea, Ramos’ availability on a free is viewed as too good an opportunity to pass up, while defence is an area head coach Mauricio Pochettino wants to bolster.
Les Parisiens’ boss is said to be keen for Ramos to impart his wisdom on the club’s less experienced defenders Presnel Kimpembe, Marquinhos, Abdou Diallo and Thilo Kehrer, who are all still under 28.
PSG have already made some shrewd moves this summer, with Gini Wijnaldum arriving on a free transfer from Liverpool, while the French giants are closing in on Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma – another free – and Inter’s Achraf Hakimi for about €70m.
