Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld is seeking a move away from Tottenham this summer and is hopeful of a move away once Euro 2020 is complete.

Alderweireld is in action on Friday night in the quarter-finals against Italy, where he will likely line up alongside former Spurs teammate Jan Vertonghen.

And Alderweireld looks set to follow in Vertonghen’s footsteps in departing Spurs one year after the 34-year-old sealed a move to Benfica, with The Athletic reporting that he has asked to leave the club.

They add that Tottenham will not stand in the way of a transfer as long as they receive an ‘appropriate’ offer, with hometown club Royal Antwerp – who beat Spurs in the Europa League last season – among those interested in a deal. Alderweireld is also wanted by clubs in Spain and Italy, while a return to Ajax has been suggested in the past.

However, with Alderweireld under contract until 2023 worth roughly £100,000-per-week, finding a suitor may be difficult.

He has impressed at Euro 2020 with Belgium, keeping a clean sheet as they knocked holders Portugal out at the round of 16 stage. He was in and out of the Spurs team at various points last season when Jose Mourinho tinkered to find a winning formula after Christmas, often being paired with Eric Dier or Davinson Sanchez.

Alderweireld joined Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in 2015 after he impressed in the Premier League with Southampton, and has since made 243 appearances for the club.

Meanwhile, Spurs’ new director of football Fabio Paratici is looking to bring in two new centre-backs this summer. The club have already made a £12.9m bid plus incentives for Bologna and Japan defender Takehiro Tomiyasu. Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Lyon’s Joachim Andersen are also of interest to Spurs, as is Inter’s Milan Skriniar, who the club held talks with last summer.
