Erik ten Hag wants to be reunited with Frenkie de Jong at Manchester United, while they have already started talks on a deal for an England midfielder and Barcelona will not make a move for one Arsenal star, all in the papers.
UNITED WANT FRENKIE
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is one of Manchester United’s “transfer priorities” this summer, according to a report in Spain.
Incoming boss Erik ten Hag is looking to revamp his Old Trafford squad. And he is keen on his old Ajax player De Jong. The pair were together in Holland and they won the Eredivisie title and KNVB Cup together.
Now Diario Sport claims the pair could be reunited with Ten Hag looking for replacements for Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.
De Jong will not be easy to lure from the Camp Nou though.
In February links with United emerged.
“I’m very happy I’m at Barcelona: from a young age I’ve wanted to be here, so in that way it has been a dream come true,” De Jong said in an interview with the Guardian.
De Jong’s father also cited the “bad weather” in Manchester as another reason why his son may not be so keen to jump to United.
Barca for their part want to keep the midfielder. And Xavi is keen to mould his team around the talented 24-year-old.
But economic pressures Barca could see United make a tempting offer for the Holland international.
UNITED MAKE START ON PHILLIPS DEAL
Manchester United are understood to have opened dialogue with Kalvin Phillips’ agent, according to the Manchester Evening News.
It appears that United and their new boss Erik ten Hag have moved on from Declan Rice. It’s thought the West Ham midfielder is too expensive, despite turning down a third contract offer with the Hammers.
And now Leeds and England star Phillips is on United’s radar. With the report claiming “United are already working on a deal”.
The outlet claim an offer of between £50m and £60m will be enough to land Phillips, who has missed a chunk of the season through injury.
Aston Villa are also interested in the player, while Spurs were mentioned this week as suitors.
But despite various sides registering interest, Phillips has remained loyal to his boyhood club to date.
BARCA BAULK AT GABRIEL PRICE TAG
Arsenal centre-back is a target for Barcelona, according to SPORT.
Barca coach Xavi is reportedly a huge fan of the Brazilian and was considering a summer approach. But Mundo Deportivo suggests that Barcelona will not be moving for the player because the Gunners would want at least €40m for the centre-back.
The Blaugrana have financial problems. And they will be working to a strict budget next season and so would not be willing to spend that type of money on a defender.
Instead, they are more likely to got for Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta.
