Former Arsenal midfielder Michael Thomas feels Darwin Nunez is the ‘perfect number nine’ for the club and has ‘Erling Haaland-like’ instincts.
Nunez has established himself as one of the very best forward talents in the world of late. Indeed, he has bagged 31 goals in 36 games this season for Benfica.
Included in that tally are six goals in 10 Champions League games. He scored a brace against Barcelona, two goals against Liverpool, and one against Bayern Munich.
Given the Uruguayan’s deadly nature in front of goal, he has gained admiration from a number of clubs, especially thanks to his goals against some of Europe’s elite.
The list of sides to have been linked with a move for Nunez is long. It includes Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea, among others.
Former Arsenal man Thomas is an admirer of the 22-year-old.
“Darwin Nunez has put in some really strong performances in the Champions League this year and he will be a great addition for any club,” he told Caught Offside.
“He is strong, good with his feet and has that Erling Haaland-like instinct in front of goal.”
Given the fantastic assets he possesses, Thomas feels Nunez would be a great snare for Arsenal. Although, he is realistic about the Gunners’ chances of landing him.
“He would be the perfect number nine for Arsenal, but if we do not get top four then I think it will be hard to acquire him. All the top teams have now seen what he can do on the biggest stage now,” Thomas added.
Future of Darwin Nunez up in the air
Thomas feels as if the battle to sign Nunez could see him end up anywhere.
However, he did name one club who he feels could have a good chance of luring him in.
“It all hangs in the balance but there is going to be a lot of movement from clubs this summer, and I could see him ending up at Bayern Munich should Robert Lewandowski leave.”
