Former Premier League disaster Serge Gnabry is reportedly a target of both Tottenham and Real Madrid this summer, amid disputes with Bayern Munich.
Gnabry played 11 Premier League games across two different seasons. Indeed, 10 of those appearances were for former club Arsenal, and one was during a loan spell with West Brom.
It seemed that Gnabry did not have what it took to play at the highest level. However, he soon found his feet upon leaving England.
The German hit 11 goals and provided two assists in his first season for Werder Bremen in 2016/17. He was quickly snapped up by Bayern for £7.2million, and then loaned out to Hoffenheim, where he contributed to 17 Bundesliga goals in a season.
That was enough to afford him a spot in Bayern’s side the following season. Gnabry has hit at least 10 goals in each of his four seasons with Bayern, showing his genuine class.
The winger has contributed to 103 goals in 168 games for the Bundesliga giants.
He is out of contract in 2023, and disagreements over a new deal could see him move on. The Daily Star reports that Gnabry is holding out for a salary of £13million per year, which Bayern are reluctant to agree to.
That same report details interest in Gnabry from a couple of big sides. Namely Tottenham, as manager Antonio Conte is apparently keen on swooping for the German.
A move to the north London outfit would be interesting, not least because he used to play for Spurs’ rivals Arsenal.
Conte’s side will, however, be rivalled by Real Madrid for Gnabry, according to the report.
Tottenham could be ahead of Real for Gnabry
Spurs may currently be ahead of Real in the pursuit of Gnabry, for one key reason.
That reason being Gareth Bale, whose contract is still taking up space on Real’s wage bill.
While the Welshman’s deal is up in the summer, Real will likely be unable to make any moves until he has left the club.
If Spurs were to begin negotiations with Bayern before that time, they could agree a deal for Gnabry before Real were able to interfere.
