Newcastle United have announced that centre-back Fabian Schar has signed a new two-year deal at the club.

The Switzerland defender was out of contract in the summer and 90min revealed in March that talks over a new deal had been planned amid interest domestically and abroad.

And Newcastle confirmed on Friday morning that Schar has put pen to paper on a fresh two-year contract at St James’ Park.

“I’m absolutely delighted. It’s what I always wanted – to stay here to play for this unbelievable club,” Schar told Newcastle’s website.

“Since my first day in Newcastle, I felt so comfortable; it’s like a second home and now to stay here for some more years, I’m delighted.”

Listen now to 90min’s brand new podcast, Talking Transfers, with Scott Saunders & Graeme Bailey. Toby Cudworth joins the show again this week to discuss how Erik ten Hag’s appointment may affect Man Utd’s pursuit of Paul Mitchell. There is also chat on the futures of Jesse Lingard & David de Gea and a look at what Newcastle are planning this summer.

Manager Eddie Howe, who has played Schar for every minute in all but two of his games in charge on Tyneside this season, added: “I’ve been delighted with Fabian’s form. He is the ultimate professional and a hugely important player in our dressing room.

“I’m delighted he has committed himself to the club. He is very driven for future success and I’m pleased he will be a part of our future.”
